Device Types:
There are basically three approaches to UPS design: Online, Line-Interactive and Standby
Online UPS:
This UPS is a bridge between the main power source and computers and appliances at the office and is designed to ensure constant power supply at all times. The batteries connected to the unit are constantly charged through a circuit linked up to the main power source. This method ensures power conditioning, which entails eradicating spikes, surges, sags and noise.
Line-Interactive UPS:
Power supply is fed through surge and noise suppression circuitry and built-in line conditioning circuitry regulates high or low voltages back to normal levels, and sends clean power to equipment without using battery power. A battery charger keeps an internal battery topped up and ready for use whenever required. During a blackout, an inverter switches on and converts battery power into a simulated sine-wave output, and switches off when normal power resumes while the battery is recharged again. The switching process between regular power and inverter power happens in milliseconds and does not affect performance of appliances being powered by or through the UPS.
ON-LINE UPS
Standby UPS:
This device is configured to allow power from the main source to flow through it and it switches over to auxiliary or battery backup whenever regular power fails. The device also ensures the voltage being supplied to electronics is constant at all times. The device kicks in and supplies power from its batteries when the power supply from the main line fluctuates or drops to unaccepted levels. The device resumes normal mains supply once the fluctuation, spike or sag has passed or stabilized.
